At the end of 2023, I finished travelling to all the countries in the world. The last one was Afghanistan. I was really surprised to discover that I was the first British born woman to do that, so I've also been in the papers and on Meridian TV and BBC TV, website and radio. (See the links below.)
For me, travelling has always been first and foremost about the experience (see About Me). I only discovered checklists and targets much later on. I've never planned my travel around these. I put the ticks in the boxes when I get home and then realise I could have added a few more......I'm well inside the top 100 travellers in the world, according to websites MTP (Most Travelled People) and Nomadmania, using their rankings which take into account how long travellers have spent in a particular place.
But I couldn't resist the challenge of visiting every country in the world, when I realised, eventually, that it actually was possible. I had various personal difficulties to overcome (see About Me). My every country list was the 193 recognised UN sovereign states, plus Vatican State, Kosovo and Taiwan, to make 196. (Progress all recorded on Instagram – @sue3travels_every_country_countdown.) Palestine and Western Sahara are also contenders for this list, of course. Maybe Somaliland and Northern Cyprus...........
After that things get more complicated. I've gone on to try and visit as many self- governing countries as possible. I'm up to 252. (Instagram - @every_territory_in_the_world). But also returning to previously trodden paths, in search of wildlife and stunning scenery. I love remote islands. My personal bucket list just grows and grows.
The posts on this website tell the story of my travels so far, often solo, recorded in words and pictures – my own window on the world. I’m not going into competition with Lonely Planet. The posts are informative (I hope) but also a subjective travelogue, recounting my adventures, reflecting my own impressions and experiences, been there, saw that, thought this, was scared by that. Dive in and read about the countries you’ve visited and the ones you haven’t. I’d love to hear your experiences, so please do email, comment, get in touch…
N.B. The pictures - other than general street scenes - everyone whose image appears here was aware that I was taking their photograph. If anyone depicted here decides at any time that they would like their picture removed please let me know and I will do it immediately.
